Rebuy in Re-entry Tournament

Post by michaelmlevin »

I tried to reproduce a very popular tournament from one of the local casinos: 25,000 chips for an initial buy in of $60 with a single rebuy of 25,000 chips for an additional $40. I tried to set up the tournament and was brought back to reality when I tried to save the tournament by an error message telling me that the rebuys field has to be 0 when Re-entry is enabled.

My Wish: Allow rebuys (and add-ons) on re-entry tournaments.

Re-entry tournaments can have bounties but rebuy tournaments cannot so they are never mixed together on Poker Mavens. Why not just allow multiple rebuys?

I understand why re-entry tournaments can have bounties while rebuy tournaments cannot. In a rebuy, you are still in the same seat and you are one player while with re-entry, you're essentially a new player. That's very different from what I'm asking. You can still lock out bounties if rebuys are enabled, but there's no similar reason to lockout rebuys in a re-entry tournament.

The reason that this live tournament was so popular is that you pay the "big" buyin and get 25,000 chips, but can get an optional ADDITIONAL 25,000 if you want to pay a little more. So the "price" of the tournament is lower but, if you want more chips, you can get them. There is no way to reproduce this scenario with multiple rebuys.

Is there a coding complication to allow rebuys in a re-entry tournament? Or is it simply locked out? If the former, then I get the reason for not going to the trouble. If if it's the latter, would you please consider allowing it????

You can still do that. You just can't make it a re-entry tournament.

Can you have an add-on in a re-entry tournament?

Yes, since an add-on cannot be used to save yourself from a bust out. Set "Add-on chips" and "Rebuy levels" to non-zero numbers. Rebuy levels just specifies the timing of the add-on but "Maximum rebuys" has to be 0.

I would suggest adding this to the docs as it wasn't clear at all to me how this would work until I found this thread ;-)

Follow up question. I have a re-entry tournament with add-on:

Maximum rebuys: 0
Maximum re-entries: 100
Level duration: 20
Break sync: No
Break time: 5
Break interval: 3
Buy-in: 50
Rebuy cost: 100
Rebuy levels: 6
Add-on chips: 10000

So, 20-minute levels with a 5-minute break every three levels and an optional add-on for twice the entry fee offered at the end of level 6. This coincides with a 5-minute break so players get 5 minutes for the add-on I believe.

If the tournament starts on-time at 6:00, that would be

6:00 - start, level 1
6:20 - level 2
6:40 - level 3
7:00 - break
7:05 - level 4
7:25 - level 5
7:45 - level 6
8:05 - break and add-on period
8:10 - level 7
...

My question is, if I set

Late Registration: 130

that would allow re-entries up until 8:10. What happens when they re-enter during the add-on period? Are they offered the add-on?

I don't think they see a notice of one because those all go out at once but as long as the add-on period is active they should be able to click the Add Chips button and get it. The best way to find out for sure is to run a simulation with test accounts and see how it behaves.

Yes it is as you described. One thing I noticed: in this re-entry + addon scenario, even though rebuys were not possible you still see these system messages

- Rebuy period will end when current hand is complete (during last hand of L6)
- Rebuy period has ended (at end of L6)

which is going to be confusing for players who don't realize they can re-enter for a little longer.
