File Browser in the Admin Console

Post by Kent Briggs »

A tip about selecting files in the version 7 Admin Console. When you are selecting a file for a setting such as a table graphic file for a ring game, you will be presented with a file browsing dialog as shown below:

The top folder in the list is always labeled ".." and if you are not as old as me you may not know that is old nomenclature going back to the MS-DOS days representing the parent folder. So when you start in the data folder (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Briggs Softworks\Poker Mavens 7\) and then double-click the ".." folder, it will take you back one level to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Briggs Softworks\. And you do that enough you will make your way down to the C:\ root folder. And one more time from there it will show all the drives on the server.

Additionally, the down arrow button you see near the bottom allows you to download any selected file from the server to your local PC. So this can be used as a backup function. And it has been to designed to be safe with the .db database files in the data folder as it will automatically pause transactions during the download and resume them again when it is done. In fact this is the only safe way to backup those database while your site is online with active players.

Also notice the "Audio" folder. That is created automatically on the first startup and now the only place you can put custom sound effect files (Pro/Gold). In previous versions you could specify your own folder. Same is true for the WebRoot folder (Pro/Gold) for storing custom html and other web media that can be served to the public. On the other hand, the Export, Graphics, and SSL folders are just there for your convenience. You do not have to use them.
