I've discovered that if you miss your blind but then ready yourself right away before the next hand is dealt that when the button has past, the player will not surrender his small blind but only post his big.

Please send me a sample handhistory of that. When missing both blinds it should post the SB portion directly to the pot as a dead blind. Does this only happen in a limit game?

I sent you a hand history to your email. This only happens when they miss the big blind and ready themselves right away. It will exempt them from posting the small blind. If they wait and ready themselves 1 hand later, it will post the proper blinds.
This happens in limit Holdem, I have not tested it in any other game.
